Promoting Your Garry’s Mod Server
Last updated: November 26, 2020
Promoting your Garry’s Mod server can make it grow very quickly If you know the best ways to advertise it. Many server owners struggle to get more than a few players on their server. Why? Its because they don’t let the right people know about it.
Here are my top 3 suggestions to help promote your site.
Create a Website
If you have the skills, then creating a website can be fantastic for promoting your server. The most popular servers always have a website or a clan page hosted by a dedicated website.
Having a website allows you to bring your community together, giving them a space where they can discuss topics and upload server related content.
In my opinion having a website for your server greatly increases your chances of attracting new players. This is because you can link your website in server posts and advertisements, which can set you apart from the hundreds of other “average” servers.
If you don’t have the skills to create a website then I would suggest using one of these free alternatives:
Join Groups on Social Media
Finding and joining GMod groups on social media is a great way to promote your server. First you will need to search for the appropriate group that allows you to advertise your server. Second you will need to create an eye-catching post that draws the users in.
1. Find Gmod Groups
Gmod groups are pretty easy to find on Facebook and steam. All you have to do is type in “looking for Gmod players” or “Gmod servers” and you will have a pretty good place to start.
In my opinion steam is the best place to advertise your server as the community is pretty active. Facebook and twitter is a little more limited but you can find a couple of groups worth joining.
Here are two links to get you started:
2. Create a Post
Once you have found and joined all the Gmod groups on social media. I would suggest next adding posts to all of these groups. Most groups have a dedicated section where you can add your server listing and promote yourself.
Creating a great post can be challenging if it’s you first time but you should always include:
- Server Name
- Server IP
- Player capacity
- Scheduled Events
- A websites or Groups that are linked to your server
- Video Links and footage of your server.
- Additional Features
- Mods or relevant Tags
- A Brief Description of your server
- A reason why people should join your server
Gmod groups have very active users and I often see players replying to server posts. If you can take the above points and get creative. You will be able to create an eye catching post that will help draw users to your server. Don’t forget to reply back to any comments on your post. Let them see that you’re active.
If you want to promote your server and drastically improve the amount of players you have. I would suggest using Google Ads. For this approach to be successful you will need your own server website and money to pay for advertising. Sadly there isn’t a free option.
I would only suggest this option to server owners who already have a large community and want to try and monetise their server. If you are serious about this option then trying gaining access to free credit from Google Ads.
I myself have used Google Ads in the past and they do offer free credit when you sign up to use the service. However you do have to sign up first. If you’re thinking about using this service in the future I would advise signing up early and waiting for Google to send you a promo offer. It can sometimes take a couple of weeks or months to receive a promo code, so the sooner you sign up the more chance you have of receiving free credit. I have been offered $75 and $100 free advertising credit in the past.
If you get creative and use the tips and tricks I have provided you can easily promote your server across a wide range of platforms. If you are unable to code and do not have the money to spend on paid advertising I would stick to using social media. It’s perfect for smaller servers.
Remember that no one wants to join an empty server. So the more players you recruit the higher the chance you will naturally attract more players. This is because the more players you have on the server the higher the server is listed on a server list.
